Water Post Acupuncture is a Vital Part of Treatment.
My patients know the post acupuncture treatment mantra well: “Make sure you drink plenty of water today and tonight.” Some wonder why, although proper hydration is a prevalent topic in health news. Most people know that generally it is very important to give our bodies plenty of water because sufficient body fluids are vital to digestion, circulation, and maintenance of body temperature (as well as many other body functions). And more than just good for your health, it is important to realize too, that what you do after your acupuncture treatment, plays a big role in the effectiveness of the treatment.
So why is it so important after an acupuncture treatment to have water?
The answer is that plenty of water post treatment will support and enhance the effect of the needles, vacuum cups or gua sha tool used during treatment. During an acupuncture session the needles are communicating with your body and each other to bring the body into balance. Thus acupuncture treatment is different for each person, as it is personalized for you and your condition, and usually different for each person on different days. For example, if a patient comes in for treatment and that day they are starting to experience the symptoms of a cold or flu, the correct treatment for their body that day is to push the cold or flu out of the system and support the immune system, even though the patient’s typical treatment focuses on enhancing fertility. While a cold probably won’t keep you from getting pregnant, it is important for the body to be as healthy as possible when trying to get pregnant, so healing quickly from a cold or flu becomes the priority of care.
During the treatment to push out a cold or flu, needles are placed in points that will address the patient’s specific symptoms – sore throat, body aches, headache, congestion, nausea. These points do the work to clear the pathogen from the body and plenty of water post treatment will continue this process, literally, by flushing the pathogenic factors out of the body, through the bloodstream and into body waste. More water will help the body get rid of these pathogenic factors and waste efficiently so you feel better sooner!
In another case, a patient complaining of chronic or acute pain in the upper back, neck or shoulders, will typically receive treatment with acupuncture and vacuum cups, and/or gua sha that day. These accessory treatments are great at reducing inflammation and stagnation in the local area (by flushing waste and bringing fresh blood to the area) and support the work of the needles to reduce pain and improve mobility. These are the people you might see at the swimming pool with large, dark circles on their skin, or you might remember Gywneth Paltrow popularizing cupping in the past. It is very important that these patients drink plenty of water – post treatment – to help the body flush out all the cellular waste pulled up when the cup is applied to the body. Cupping and gua sha bring fresh blood to the inflamed area and extra water supports and completes the process of pushing out this waste. The result of the acupuncture treatment and the patient drinking more water is reduced pain and increased mobility. Win win!!
These are just two examples of the importance of water post acupuncture – there are many more. You don’t have to drink 100 ounces of water, just a few more glasses than the normal healthy amount for your body weight.
