Working From Home 2020/2021
Numbness in Arms and Hands, Carpal Tunnel, and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

I know many people love how their commute to work has changed from a 30 minute car, bike or bus ride to a walk down the hall. One thing a home office doesn’t have, though, is someone who is an expert in ergonomics to come in and set up or evaluate your workstation. Our new world of increased screen time and computing comes with some physical stressors that were present before 2020, but these are now at a new height — due to many of us being in less than ideal work-from-home setups.
Along with the lack of a precise ergonomic setup, we have continued high levels of other activities that put stress on the upper back, neck, chest and arms (namely cell phone use, gaming activities, leisure computer use and driving). What this perfect storm has created is a continued crisis of anterior head carriage, neck stress, strain and upper back tension, carpel tunnel syndrome, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
Symptoms of these conditions include:
— Numbness/tingling in the arm, fingers and/or hands
— Swelling in the hands
— Waking at nighttime with these symptoms (above)
— Neck pain, tight muscles, general upper back tension
— Lack of mobility in neck and shoulders
— Headaches — especially tension
— Weakness in hands and lack of wrist strength
Again, many people may be struggling with these but feel unsure of leaving home for diagnosis and treatment (acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and physical therapy are all good modalities to help with these issues!!!) If this is you, here are a few tips you can try to help relieve your condition and give you some pain reduction and increased mobility until you feel more comfortable about receiving in person care. Trying these tips based on what you are experiencing can help but it is ideal to receive in person professional care for evaluation and treatment as soon as you can.
— Perform these stretches and exercises daily to help strengthen the muscles of the cervical spine, and also stretch the Pectoralis major and minor to open the chest.
— Get a better chair for your home office and attempt a self evaluation of your workspace setup using ergonomic tips to improve your desk area. Many people are now investing in a gaming chair to provide better support for their body while at the computer or home office workspace.
— If you have carpel tunnel, or suspect you do, a wrist brace may help. You can wear these while at work or while sleeping (especially if you wake with numbness, tingling, prickling and swelling in the arms and hands). Braces are generally affordable, come in a variety of sizes and can work wonders.
— Yoga stretches for the wrist and forearm can help open up the carpel tunnel and reduce the severity of your condition, hopefully helping you avoid your condition from becoming more severe. Doing movement daily to help improve mobility in your neck, shoulder and chest also helps (as mentioned above).
— You may actually have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) if you are experiencing numbness and tingling in your arm or arms. This will be helped with stretching the pectoral muscles, as detailed in the bullet above, and you can try these stretches as well.
If you are confused about what is going on in your body, we are glad to help. If you feel nervous about an in person appointment, we would be happy to help you via a telemedicine session. While none of these conditions are life threatening, if left untreated they can result in permanent pain or mobility issues, or even require surgery. 2021 may not offer much more in terms of community interaction, we encourage you to not delay in addressing your body’s needs.
