Acupuncture Magic
In my opinion, there’s almost nothing more interesting than that which cannot be easily
explained. Some people call that magic, other’s call it spiritual or experiencing the ineffable
(that which is unable to be expressed in words, indescribable, too great or extreme to be
expressed or describe in words). This is like the feeling of oneness when experiencing a
beautiful part of the natural world, such as the Grand Canyon, or the feeling of joy you might
have when you meet your new baby, or puppy, for the first time.
The cool thing is that this happens as part of an acupuncture session on a regular basis. I’m
lucky to not only be a facilitator of magic, but I get to experience it when I receive acupuncture
as well. Magic can create healing, facilitate healing, open you up to healing, whether or not.
you are ready. Sometimes folks are not ready for the changes acupuncture can bring them -
because this healing is profound, it can be startling, or uncomfortable. Like a butterfly from a
cocoon, this transformation brings beauty, expansiveness, and an awareness of the spiritual
world which many of us are out of touch with in our day to day lives.
Healing is not just a physical experience. Yes, physical healing is important, but deeper
changes come from healing spiritual and emotional issues, along with and often preceding the
physical. Sometimes (oftentimes, usually) the physical healing results from the healing of spirit,
or emotion. This is well known in psychology, as more and more work on trauma and healing
trauma reveals the physical ramifications of directly healing trauma.
How is acupuncture magical? It creates a healing experience that cannot easily be explained.
While there are many people who study how acupuncture works (along fascial planes!), or what
it does to the body (increases white blood cell count, increases endorphins, decreases
inflammatory molecules such as cytokines), this is but one part of the picture. All these
changes are important for physical health, but the magical experience of acupuncture needles
communicating with each other across your body, is healing of itself.
I’ll often walk into the treatment room at the end of treatment to hear a patient describe how
different points felt “on” at different times of the treatment, with feelings of electricity, glow, or
pulsation, as the treatment progressed. These descriptions tell me that the body was able to
take in the information about the goal of each needle and then the needles worked in concert,
with the body’s intelligence, to create change to the physical, emotional or spiritual issue(s)
facing that patient, that day. Like an orchestra of healing, your body and spirit are affected by
the points and how they work individually as well as together. It is a beautiful and profound
experience.
Ancient acupuncturists knew about the spiritual nature of acupuncture points - there are a
segment of known points that are called “window of the sky” points, specifically used and
described for their ability to spiritually connect the patient by opening up these points, as they
are needed, for certain conditions or situations. While these points are very specifically
connected to spirit, actually all acupuncture points have this capacity, when paired correctly,
based on the patient’s needs. Many of the window of the sky points are on the neck, which is a
part of the body that frequently becomes clogged, especially for people suffering from
emotional or spiritual issues. If you think about it, the neck is a very narrow region which
connects our head (and the master of the body, the brain), to the rest of the body, our torso,
with many organs and activities. In order to have mental and emotional clarity, the area of the
neck must be open, so qi, blood, yin and yang can flow freely. When the free flow does not
occur, the congestion of the neck can lead to spiritual and emotional blocks. So these “window
of the sky” points allow for a re-connection between the earth (our torso and lower body) to the
sky (our head and above).
Acupuncture magic is real and healing. After the experience you can re-enter your life with
more clarity, energy, peace and hopefully, spiritual connection. The process of treatment is like
tending a garden of spirit, where we come back to again and again as we are disconnected
through a life of material pressures. But on the treatment table we can experience magic, and
that experience begins a process of change which many of us crave. This is something not
often found in this world, and for that very reason it is valuable and precious. It is this precious,
magical, ineffable nature of acupuncture that makes it so special to me, and many others, and
drives me to share it with as many people that want (not just need) this type of healing.
