Chronic Fatigue? Fibromyalgia? Actually you might have Chronic Lyme Disease
Again Lyme disease is in the news. It is summer time, so of course more folks are outside, camping, hiking and vacationing. And yes, the midwest has a lot of ticks, and a lot of Lyme, even though the disease is more often associated with the East coast. But know that Lyme disease is found in every state in the US, as well as all over the world, so it pays to pay attention. When you (and your children if you have them, or pets) are out and about enjoying the summer please remember to use bug spray and to check your body afterwards for ticks. Even the Environmental Working Group recommends Deet, but there are other options listed as well.
I write a lot about Lyme disease – especially chronic Lyme disease – because there are so many people out there who probably have it and just don’t know it. Folks in chronic pain, such as those with Fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue, may be suffering actually from Lyme (they could also have mold toxicity, because this often looks a lot like Lyme, but that’s the subject of another blog). Two of the best books out there about chronic inflammatory diseases (including Lyme) are called Why Can’t I Get Better – and the follow up, You Can Get Better, by Dr. Horowitz. Dr. Horowitz has seen thousands of patients who have been to 10-20 doctors as they attempt to find help for their fatigue or their pain who actually have Lyme disease causing their medical issues (or mold toxicity). Having chronic pain or chronic fatigue is bad enough – but to be told there is no answer, or that the problem is all in your head, can be devastating.
I’ve been in practice for 10 years. In my early years of practice I was not well versed in identifying patients who might have Lyme disease. But over the past 4 years I’ve learned more and more about Lyme disease, mold toxicity, how to identify patients who might have these issues, and how to help them. It is also important to me to raise awareness – and the CDC now acknowledges that there are a lot more folks with Lyme disease than previously reported or suspected.
So if you have been struggling with chronic fatigue, mysterious joint pain, headaches, treatment resistant depression or anxiety, unexplained weight gain, chronic sinus infections, or diagnosed with fibromyalgia, don’t give up. There’s hope – and effective treatment out there – and you can start by coming to see me for an initial consultation. Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, supplements, and essential oils are powerful tools to start the healing process. We can also guide you to the best doctors and tests to help you find out more about why you feel the way you do. So please, don’t give up!
