Acupuncture heals body mind and spirit
One of the most interesting aspects of Chinese medicine is the relationship between emotions, spirit, organs and illness - and that different organ systems are affected by different emotions. If emotions are not dealt with in a healthy way, the organ system related to the emotion becomes out of balance and eventually the person becomes ill. An improperly dealt with emotion can also lead to spiritual issues (called the shen in Chinese), eventually manifesting as emotions out of balance, resulting in emotional issues or physical illness.
An example you may have experienced relates to grief and the lung/respiratory system - because grief is related to the lungs , when someone experiences a trauma that results in grief, such as a parent or friend dying, they oftentimes become ill with a respiratory infection after the grief-related event occurs. Other emotional-organ relationships include: fear being related to the kidney system, anger to the liver, joy to the heart, and overthinking (worrying!) related to the spleen.
Acupuncture treatment at this juncture focuses on points that help the body release the grief from the lung and respiratory system and herbs that work to keep the lungs strong, resilient and free from the burdens of grief. Through appropriate treatment the patient can avoid coming down with a cold, sore throat, sinus infection, bronchitis or pneumonia. And by receiving treatment during and after the grief related experience, the body does not store the sometimes toxic emotions in the body, which can cause more severe or continued problems down the road.
When not properly dealt with, fear, like grief can cause emotional and physical health issues. Conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can arise from a strong fear experience that has not been dealt with immediately. For example, a few years ago a patient witnessed someone almost drowning in a pool, after having a sudden cardiac event. The patient was at first confused about who was drowning, and thought initially it was her husband. After this extremely fearful situation the patient came in for treatment and described that she could not stop replaying the event in her mind, thoughts which persisted during the daytime and even at night while she slept.
Her acupuncture treatment at that time focused on releasing the fear, treating the PTSD , calming her spirit, and allowing the memory of the event to be released from her mind and body. One week later when she returned for a follow up treatment, she reported that she no longer ruminated over the event and was not bothered by the persistent and intrusive replaying of the memory, either in the daytime or during sleep. Recent discussions with the patient confirm that she continues to be able to reflect on the memory with no re-triggering of the PTSD or anxiety related to what happened.
