What are you waiting for? How to make 2016 your healthiest year yet!
At the end of every year I like reflecting on the last twelve months. I consider my life, my health and generally how things are going and assess what might need to change in the next year. Every year, I am lucky to say, gets better, regardless of the exterior circumstances of my life. I find it has gotten easier as I’ve gotten older to ask for help, look for new resources, and take steps that a few years ago, or months I might not have been willing or able to take.
So what’s stopping you?
Is there an area of your life and your health that you are not willing to change or look at? Do you need to take some action you are not willing to take? Do you know what you need to do next? These are great things to think about as we start the new year which is usually the biggest time for people to consider and implement change.
Here are the top five reasons patients give me for not being able to take action to improve their health.
- It is too hard (to give up a certain food for example, or change their diet)
- Not enough time
- Not enough money
- I’ve tried it before; didn’t work or I couldn’t stick with the program
- I don’t know how
Let’s talk about all of these individually – I can share with you some of the ideas I provide my patients to help them to get past these hurdles and onto a healthier life.
- It is too hard – absolutely this is a valid reason. Being healthy or healthier is hard, but it can also be done. The best way to approach this, especially changing the diet by removing specific foods or adding new ones is to go slowly, be gentle with yourself, and do it one day at a time. Who can give up sugar, or gluten, or dairy all at once? Some people, but not most people. Acupuncture is amazing at helping the body heal, but if you are gluten intolerant, or have a leaky gut, your pain may not go away with just acupuncture. So start small and give up gluten for day at a time then for a week or a month and see how you feel. You know what you feel like eating that food, why not try life without it? You can always eat it again!
- Not enough time. Yep, also valid. This often applies to getting frequent enough acupuncture treatments, or exercise, or meditation, or clean eating/cooking. And even if it is true, how can your health not be the highest priority on your list? Of course it doesn’t have to be, but can you see that it should be? Again, I recommend starting small. Do 10 squats a day. Use MyFitnessPal to see if you are walking 10,000 steps a day, meditate for 5 minutes or 3. All of these are steps in the right direction. And little steps make bigger steps easier.
- Not enough money. It’s easy to spend money on a new purse, shoes or a trip to the Bahamas. And some of these might actually help your health (I’m definitely an advocate of vacations that involve a lot of relaxation). Sometimes people lose their job and so can’t afford to come in for treatment with me anymore. That is understandable. The good news, though, is that there are two acupuncture schools in Chicago that offer low cost care and so even if you can’t see me, you can see someone. Sometimes the work-around is fewer treatments. Again, this option I believe is better than no treatment.
- I’ve tried it before but it didn’t work or I couldn’t stick with it. This I hear a lot from smokers. Quitting smoking is hard, no two ways about it. To get results, though, you must keep quitting, over and over, until it sticks. One day it will. I don’t know when that day will happen and I can support you and use all the tools I have (acupuncture, herbs, cupping) to get you there. This is when the tool of dilligence is especially useful. And also knowing that this habit is really deadly and you will be happier when you can quit, once and for all.
- I don’t know how. This is exactly what I am here for – aside from giving you an amazing acupuncture treatment, I’m here to help you learn how you can make changes in your life that will improve your health. I can point you in the direction of new resources, books, practitioners, phone apps or websites, or ideas that will help you address whatever issue you don’t know how to address or change. Sometimes this just involves meeting someone or knowing that you might not have to know how in order to change something (I don’t know how to swim or I don’t know how to meditate are good examples). For each of these there are teachers and if finding a teacher is too much for you (or part of the problem), I can step in and perhaps point you in the next right direction. It is my job to know what’s out there, find the best resources for my patients, and share them with you freely.
As you might have guessed I love acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. It has worked wonders for my life and health and I love my own acupuncturist and getting treated. I would be glad to help you with any issue you may have. I will also tell you if I think you need to add another modality into your care or need other practitioners as well. The new year is a great time to take a good look at what you want for your life and your health. It really is never too late to change. What are you waiting for? Are you ready to make 2016 your healthiest year yet?
