For Happy, Healthy Skin – A Few of My Favorite Products
Winter’s really here in Chicago (last fall was so warm that I thought we might get a pass this year, but no, I was wrong). I really love the fact that we have seasons, but as an acupuncturist I am somewhat dismayed by Chicago’s more intense winters and the subsequent dryness. One thing I recommend frequently is using the right products on your skin. Here are a few of my favorite winter products for happy, healthy skin.
One of my winter (and really to be honest) summer standards is lip balm. I really dislike chapped lips and I also dislike chemical additives, so I’m constantly on the hunt to find the ideal lip balm which is moisturizing but not too waxy, that stays on, my skin absorbs and that has a pleasant and natural flavor. It is possible to use just plain coconut oil, but how would I carry that around with me all day long? And so I hunt, online, in stores, read reviews and try a wide variety of products. One of my recent favorites I ordered on Amazon – it is called Lip Loks (1), and comes in a handy 5 pack. I also like the Honest Company’s lip balm (3) trio, which is, like Lip Loks, made from organic ingredients with essential oils for flavoring.
I’ve also thought more lately about lotions and creams that are recommended for dry skin in the winter – I wash my hands multiple times a day and will definitely have cracking and bleeding skin if I do not frequently moisturize, especially in the winter. Lotions and creams are often full of those chemicals I am trying to avoid – phthalates, parabens, sulfates, and fragrances – so at home after bathing I use grapeseed oil or apricot seed oil. Both of these are available at natural food stores and a little goes a long way. Sometimes I add a drop or two of my favorite essential oil to the bottle (be careful not to overdo it with the peppermint essential oil, it can be intense!). When I travel I double bag a small bottle of oil and avoid using the hotel room products as much as possible.
For my hands at work and at home I use a really effective product called Waxelene (2). I initially met Waxelene at Whole Foods when I purchased their tube of lip balm. I liked the lip balm (the format was not my favorite, the tube you squeeze rather than the stick you swivel up), but I really fell in love when I bought a 9 oz glass jar of it for my home to apply to my hands every evening after work. The reason I like it so much is it is the consistency of petroleum jelly but is made from natural products (here’s the list, organic soy oil, beeswax, natural vitamin e oil, and organic rosemary oil). It seals the skin, somewhat, and moisturizes, so when I continually wash my hands they do not become as dried out and I don’t have cracked, bleeding painful hands.
Hopefully these suggestions will help your skin, and you, stay comfortable this winter. I also see patients in my clinic who struggle with acne, psoriasis, roseacea and eczema. If you are looking for help with any of these dermatological issues (or any one not mentioned here), I’d be happy to help.
