I love Acupuncture Series: Reason Three – chronic & complex health conditions
Yet another reason I love acupuncture - an effective treatment for chronic and complex health conditions
As you probably know by now, I’m pretty smitten with the power of acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
For some people acupuncture seems like magic, and while there’s some research into how it works, I find the best way for someone to know that acupuncture works is to try it and see for themselves. Like surgery, acupuncture is best understood in a case study type perspective, where the patient is observed before and after the treatment. Like surgery, after an acupuncture treatment a patient will have less pain and improved mobility, in the case of a person with a joint injury or chronic issue.
But what about the patient who has seen many many doctors with little or no relief? Or the patient that is in chronic pain, fatigue, joints swollen and can’t think, but is not satisfied with the offerings of traditional western medicine or isn’t really seeing any relief from those treatments? These are often the ideal patient for me – I enjoy the process of being a detective and sorting through all complexity that has become their health (or lack of). It is also important to me that my patients walk out of the clinic feeling better on some level or to some degree, with less pain, more hope, less stress or just feeling calmer. At first, this can be a big deal.
Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, largely unexplained fatigue and joint pain, multiple sclerosis, chronic allergies or food intolerances, unexplained fever and infection are some of the western diagnoses applied to these folks. They might also know they have Lyme disease – or mold toxicity – or they might be candidates for testing for these conditions. Sometimes people just don’t feel well and their doctor cannot find a cause but they have symptoms. These are definitely people who can also benefit from treatment with acupuncture and chinese herbs. I have experience working with these conditions and feel drawn to treating these patients. One reason why is that I am passionate about finding out why, if possible, someone has a certain set of symptoms and problems, even if I cannot make the determination of the cause myself. I know I don’t know everything and often refer patients to other practitioners for the right blood work and other testing. My job is to help you find out what is happening, make a plan for your treatment, and get you to the right doctor or other medical professional who can help, if needed. And most of all to help you start feeling better as soon as possible.
Let me clarify – these are complex medical issues and they rarely react quickly to treatment – in fact they may not react to treatment in a way that I expect, which tips me off that something bigger and more complicated is going on. I now have enough experience with these complex issues to know that when this happens someone is probably suffering from something deeper – perhaps undiagnosed Lyme disease and the co-infections that often occur – when they do not respond to my treatment the way most folks do. I have been in practice for almost 8 years and have the privilege of seeing many patients experiencing a wide variety of problems. For the most part when I create a treatment plan for a patient and they come in for treatment as recommended, take herbs and supplements, make a few lifestyle changes, many of their symptoms improve or disappear. For someone with a deeper, more chronic and probably undiagnosed complicated health issue, their healing is slower and may come in fits and starts, unfortunately. But healing can happen. And I am happy to take on that work with you, to help make a plan for you, and to help you understand, as I see it, what is possibly happening in your body.
