Hello Spring, goodbye allergies!
Spring Allergies
Spring in Chicago can’t be beat. Almost overnight trees, bushes, flowers and plants have bloomed or sprouted beautiful, lush leaves (it is especially apparent with the trees where to me the city becomes green in an instant). Lovely to look at and experience, unless you are too busy sneezing or too sleepy from the allergy medicine you had to take to stop constantly sneezing and blowing your nose.
One of the most amazing aspects of acupuncture/Chinese herbs and supplements is that they can treat the symptoms of a problem as well as the root of the issue. People might need Sudafed, or Claritin, or whatever allergy medicine their doctor or the drugstore offers because they cannot get through that day without runny eyes, itchy palate or eyes, sneezing, maybe puffy skin, or a terrible headache. In a pinch these products and many others can tamp down that allergic reaction you experience to whatever beautiful plant has recently bloomed. But in the long term taking anti-histamines and over the counter medicine can be hard on your body – older antihistamines have been shown to be unsafe for long term use as they have been linked to increased risk of dementia for older adults. Long term I recommend trying a natural remedy to combat your symptoms and to actually strengthen your immune system. Chinese Medicine looks at allergies as weakness of the immune system which can be strengthened by treatment, herbs, vitamins and supplements and lifestyle changes. An acupuncture treatment will open the sinus passages, reduce inflammation, and get rid of that unpleasant headache. Lifestyle changes you can really start doing now – washing your hands and face frequently when the pollen count is high – changing your pillow case nightly, closing windows (darn!), and using a nasal irrigation method like the neti pot.
What I can do for you is determine what your body needs to find relief – and offer natural remedies which are non-drowsy, effective and that result in your immune system functioning better so that you not only avoid the allergic reactions, but you also avoid the frequent colds or sinus infections that may come along with allergy season. If your system is already inflamed it is quite easy to succumb to a bacterial or viral infection (they do love a nicely inflamed sinus passage!). I’ve treated many patients suffering from such a cycle and helped them find relief not only from their allergies but from getting sick with a sinus infection.
These are general guidelines; everyone’s body is unique. Please contact me for a consultation for your specific needs.
